You’ll love this no fuss blueberry cobbler with cake mix. It’s a super simple shortcut dessert that tastes like it took way more effort than it actually did.
Blueberry Cobbler With Cake Mix
This blueberry cobbler is so easy, delicious, and is such a crowd-pleaser. It’s so fast to pull together, and it’s definitely a family-favorite recipe. My entire family loves blueberries so much, so this is something we love making whenever we have extras.
Even though you can make it with blueberry pie filling instead of fresh blueberries, I really think it’s worth it to use fresh blueberries. The texture of the baked dessert is incredible, and it’s perfectly sweet without being overly sweet.
This extremely easy blueberry cobbler is so delicious on its own, but it also tastes incredible served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The warm berry cobbler with cake mix paired with the slowly melting ice cream on top is seriously an experience that can’t be beat.
Ingredients
Fresh Blueberries: This is the most important ingredient in this recipe. Look for firm, sweet, fresh blueberries. You can also swap this for other fruit if you like. Sliced peaches, blackberries, or raspberries would all work great here.
Sugar: Just a little bit of sugar helps enhance the sweetness of the blueberries. It also helps thicken the filling and create a syrupy texture.
Lemon Juice: Lemon and blueberry is one of my favorite flavor combinations. It adds just a hint of bright freshness, and balances out the sweet blueberry flavor so well.
Yellow Cake Mix: This is such a great shortcut ingredient to use in cobblers. It makes this recipe so quick and easy to prepare. I prefer using yellow cake mix instead of white cake mix because it has a more custardy flavor.
Cinnamon: Adding just a touch of ground cinnamon levels up the flavor of the boxed cake mix, making the whole dish taste homemade instead of tasting like a shortcut dessert.
Unsalted Butter: We’re mixing this with the cake mix to create the cobbler topping. The fat helps it get crisp, golden, and absolutely delicious.

How To Make Blueberry Cobbler with Cake Mix
Prep: Lightly grease a 13×9-inch baking dish and set aside. (See the recipe card below for the full printable instructions.)
Mix the Fruit: In a large bowl, gently toss the blueberries with the sugar and lemon juice until they’re evenly coated.
Layer: Spread the blueberry mixture evenly across the bottom of the prepared baking dish.
Make the Crumble: In a separate bowl, whisk together the yellow cake mix and cinnamon.

Pour in the melted butter and stir until a thick, crumbly dough forms. Use your fingers to break it into even crumbles.

Top: Sprinkle the crumble mixture evenly over the blueberries, covering the entire surface.
Bake: Place it in the oven and bake it until the topping is golden brown and the blueberries are bubbly around the edges.

Cool: Remove it from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. See the recipe card below for the full written instructions, including ingredient amounts, cooking times, and helpful tips, etc.

Pro Tips
- Mix the Butter with the Cake Mix: Mixing the melted butter and the cake mix together makes such a big difference! This small step is what moistens the dry cake mix, which stops you from getting dry patches in the cobbler. This method has much better results for me than drizzling the butter over top, which is what I normally see other people doing.
- Spread the Topping Evenly: Make sure you get the topping spread out evenly all the way to the edges. That way every bite will be a combination of the delicious blueberries and the crisp, sweet topping.
- Let it Rest: Letting it rest after baking gives the blueberries a chance to thicken and the flavors a chance to meld.
What’s The Difference Between Blueberry Cobbler And Blueberry Dump Cake?
They’re both layered berry desserts that have a crisp and buttery topping. Blueberry cobbler is normally made with a batter topping or with a classic biscuit topping. Blueberry dump cake, on the other hand, is typically made with a boxed cake mix topping as a shortcut. It can also be made with fresh blueberries or with blueberry pie filling.
Normally, blueberry dump cakes can end up with powdery spots in the topping that aren’t ideal. This recipe mixes the melted butter with the cake mix first, so it only requires the effort of a dump cake, but you get the results of a cobbler. It really is the best of both worlds!

How Do I Know When Blueberry Cobbler Is Done?
You can tell that blueberry cobbler is finished baking when the top is golden and crisp, and the fruit filling is visibly bubbling along the edges of the pan.
Can I Use Frozen Blueberries?
Definitely! You don’t even need to thaw the berries, I’d recommend using them straight from frozen if you plan to use frozen blueberries. Just know that it might take a little longer to bake and the filling might be a touch more liquidy than if you’d used fresh blueberries.
Can I Use Canned Blueberry Pie Filling?
Yes! Just be sure to skip the added sugar since canned blueberry pie filling is already sweetened. The results will definitely be sweeter than this recipe is, but it will still be super delicious.

Crockpot Instructions
This is actually a super easy recipe to make in the Crockpot. Mix the blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice in the bottom of a slow cooker and spread it out across the bottom. Make the cake mix topping as instructed in the recipe card, then spread it across the filling evenly. Cover with the fitted lid and cook for 2-2.5 hours on HIGH.
What To Serve With Blueberry Cobbler
This cobbler honestly doesn’t need to be served with anything, but if you want to serve it with something on the side my favorite is serving it warm with a scoop of ice cream. It also tastes great with fresh whipped cream or a bit of powdered sugar on top.
Storing And Freezing Leftovers
Let the leftovers cool, then transfer it to an airtight container. You can store it in the fridge for up to 3 days, reheating individual portions in the microwave or the entire cobbler in the oven. You can freeze leftovers for up to 2 months, but I’d recommend letting it thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.
