Pork Steaks

These pork steaks were a dream come true – tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. This recipe always gets devoured as soon as I make it!

First, they’re rubbed in a homemade blend of garlic and onion powder, thyme, and rosemary. This gave the pork a savory flavor that pairs beautifully with the meat.

Then they were marinated in a mix of Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, apple cider vinegar, and fresh garlic. The longer they marinade, the better. I always marinate them for at least an hour, but 6 hours is even better. The apple cider vinegar tenderized the pork while it soaked up all the wonderful flavors.

Whether you’re cooking for a special occasion or just need a break from your usual dinner routine, these pork steaks are a fantastic choice. They’re simple to prepare, and they cook up tender and juicy every time. I can’t wait for you to try them!

Ingredients

Pork Steaks: 1/2” thick pork steaks absorb the marinade beautifully, resulting in a tender, juicy steak that is packed with flavor. Plus, without the bone, they cook more evenly and are easier to eat. It’s a win-win!

Paprika, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Dried Thyme, Dried Rosemary, Salt & Pepper: These are the ingredients to make the best homemade seasoning blend that’s savory and packed with flavor. These spices infuse the pork steak with an irresistible flavor that keeps you coming back for more.

Soy Sauce, Worcestershire Sauce, Apple Cider Vinegar, Brown Sugar, Garlic, Dijon Mustard: These are the ingredients for our marinade. It’s this blend that tenderizes the meat and adds a depth of flavor that will make you want seconds.

Olive Oil: I use olive oil to sear the pork steaks before baking them. It adds a lovely richness to the meat and helps to create a beautiful golden crust.

Alternative Ingredients

If you don’t have these exact ingredients on hand, don’t worry! You can substitute the dried herbs with fresh ones (just keep in mind that dried herbs are 3 times more potent than fresh herbs). You can also use white vinegar with a splash of apple juice in place of apple cider vinegar, or honey instead of brown sugar. Feel free to experiment with what you have available.

Pro Tips

  • For a spicier kick, add some cayenne pepper to the homemade seasoning blend.
  • Try to marinate the pork steaks for a longer period if you can – it really enhances the flavor.
  • Always let your meat rest for a few minutes after cooking. This allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and juicy steak.

How Do You Cook Pork Steaks So They Are Not Tough?

The key to tender pork steaks is marinating them beforehand and cooking them at a moderate heat. This allows the meat to cook evenly without drying out.

How Long Do You Cook Pork Steaks For?

Cooking times will vary depending on the size and thickness of your steaks, and how well done you like them. Always check the internal temperature with a meat thermometer to ensure it’s cooked safely.

Is Pork Steak Good For Pulled Pork?

While it’s not the traditional cut used for pulled pork, you can certainly use pork steak. The key is to cook it low and slow so that it becomes tender enough to pull apart.

What Are Pork Steaks Good For?

Pork steaks are incredibly versatile. They can be grilled, fried, baked, or even slow cooked in a crock pot. They’re excellent in tacos, smothered with country gravy, or served with a side dish of seasoned rice or roasted baby potatoes.

Garnishing the fully cooked pork steaks with fresh thyme after baking.

Do You Cook Pork Steaks Fast Or Slow?

While you can cook pork steaks quickly on a high heat, I find that cooking them slowly at a moderate temperature results in a more tender and flavorful steak.

What Do You Eat With Pork Steak?

The beauty of this pork recipe is that it pairs well with a variety of side dishes. You can go for classic sides like mashed potatoes, slow cooker green beans, or coleslaw. If you’re in the mood for something a little more adventurous, try it with a tangy vinegar coleslaw or pickled onions. And of course, a side of seasoned rice is a staple for a reason – it’s the perfect complement to the rich flavors of the pork.

Should You Rinse Pork Steaks?

You might be tempted to rinse your pork steaks, but it’s actually best not to. Rinsing can spread bacteria around your kitchen and it doesn’t improve the flavor or texture of the meat. Instead, just pat your steaks dry with a paper towel before seasoning.

How Do You Keep Pork Steak Tender?

Marinating your pork steak can help to tenderize it and keep it juicy. Also, avoid overcooking it as this can make it tough and dry.

Is It Best To Fry Or Grill Pork Steaks?

Whether you choose to fry or grill your pork steaks really depends on your preference and what you have available. Both methods can yield delicious results. Pan frying in a cast iron skillet gives you a nice, crispy crust, while grilling provides that smoky flavor we all love.

How To Grill Pork Steaks

If you don’t want to use the oven, you can also grill them. Simply preheat your grill to medium-high heat and cook the steaks for 5-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F.

How Do You Season Pork Before Cooking?

Before cooking, rub the pork with a mixture of spices to enhance its flavor. In this recipe, we use a homemade blend of paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt, and pepper. After that, let it rest in a marinade so that it absorbs the maximum amount of flavor.

Is Pork Steak The Same As Pork Shoulder?

Pork steak is often cut from the shoulder but it’s not the same. Pork shoulder is a larger cut that is often used for roasting or slow cooking, while pork steak is a smaller cut that is suitable for grilling or frying.

How Do I Store Leftovers?

Leftover pork steak can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven until warmed through. This will help maintain their tenderness and flavor. Enjoy your leftovers as is, or slice them up for sandwiches or salads.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 30 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

Homemade Seasoning Blend:

  • 1 Tablespoon paprika
  • 1 Tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon dried rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

Marinade:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Pork:

  • 4 boneless pork steaks (about 1/2-inch thick)
  • 2 Tablespoons olive oil

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine the paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt, and black pepper to create the homemade seasoning blend. Set aside.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, brown sugar, minced garlic, and Dijon mustard to create the marinade.
  3. Rub the pork steaks evenly with the homemade seasoning blend, ensuring that both sides are well coated.
  4. Place the seasoned pork steaks in a large resealable plastic bag or a shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the steaks, making sure they are fully submerged. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, though I’d recommend at least 2 hours if you can. I prefer these after they’ve been marinating for 6 hours or overnight for best results.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Remove the pork steaks from the marinade, allowing any excess to drip off. Discard the remaining marinade.
  6. Heat the olive oil in a large oven-safe skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the pork steaks for 2-3 minutes per side, or until they develop a nice brown crust.
  7. Transfer the skillet with the seared pork steaks to the preheated oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F. Check the internal temperature with an instant read meat thermometer after 15 minutes (mine normally take 20 minutes, but it can overcook quickly, so it’s best to check with a meat thermometer a little early.
  8. Remove the skillet from the oven and let the pork steaks rest for 5 minutes before serving. (Pork steaks need to reach at least an internal temperature of 145°F, followed by at least a 3-minute rest time, to be safe to eat.)

Notes

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

To reheat, place the pork steaks in a 350°F oven for 10-15 minutes, or until warmed through.

For a spicier kick, add 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the homemade seasoning blend.

You can also grill the pork steaks instead of baking them. Simply preheat your grill to medium-high heat and cook the steaks for 5-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 145°F, followed by a 3-minute rest.

  2. I have never been able to make pork steaks moist and tender. I made this recipe last night and my husband raved over it. Told me I could make it any time I wanted. I only let the steaks marinade for 30 minutes since my steaks weren’t thawed out earlier in the day. It’s definitely a keeper recipe and I will be making it again.
