If youโ€™re looking for an all around seasoning blend that you can do just about anything pasta related with, this seasoning for spaghetti is the recipe youโ€™ve been looking for! You can sprinkle it on buttered spaghetti, cook it into ground beef, flavor meat sauce or marinara sauce, use it to season meatballs or meatloaf, and so much more. Itโ€™s a really versatile spice blend that my entire family loves.

So, the next time youโ€™re looking for a delicious herb mix to spice up your spaghetti pasta, ditch the store bought packets and make this zesty homemade DIY spaghetti seasoning instead! It really is the best seasoning for spaghetti, I promise you wonโ€™t be disappointed.

Ingredients

Basil: Basil is a classic pairing with pasta. It has a flavor thatโ€™s herby, and somewhere between sweet and savory.

Oregano: Oregano is also another classic pairing with spaghetti, but it has a more earthy flavor than basil does.

Garlic Powder: This adds a rich, aromatic flavor that almost has a buttery element.

Onion Powder: Onion powder adds a sweetness to the sauce while also adding an element of savory richness.

Parsley: This herb adds a clean and fresh taste.

Red Pepper Flakes: This adds a bit of kick without adding too much spice to the dish.

Black Pepper: Pepper works to make the flavor of this spice blend taste bolder, with just a bit of a kick.

Thyme: Thyme is similar to mint, but itโ€™s more earthy and a little bit sweet.

Marjoram (or Rosemary): Marjoram is another earthy herb thatโ€™s like a milder version of oregano, while rosemary adds a deeper flavor profile.

Fennel Seeds: These have a taste thatโ€™s reminiscent of licorice.

Pro Tips

  • Grind the Spices: This is totally up to your preference, but if you like a fine spice blend where everything has an even texture, I recommend grinding the spices in a spice grinder. This will also make the flavor more potent.
  • Store it Properly: Itโ€™s important to store this spice blend in an airtight container and in a cool, dark, dry place. This will help the flavors stay as potent as possible.

What Is The Best Way To Season Spaghetti Noodles?

In addition to using this spaghetti seasoning, itโ€™s important to salt the pasta water. Cooking spaghetti in salted water is your only chance to season the pasta from the inside out, so it makes a big difference in the final flavor.

What Can I Add To Spaghetti For Flavor?

In addition to the seasonings in this recipe, like basil, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, parsley, red pepper flakes, black pepper, thyme, marjoram, rosemary, and fennel, there are so many ways you can easily add tons of flavor to spaghetti. Some of my favorites are butter, olive oil, cheese (especially Parmesan cheese), lemon juice, pesto, marinara sauce, Italian sausage, and even anchovy paste.

Do You Put Seasoning Before Or After Cooking Noodles?

You put the seasoning on after cooking and draining the noodles. You can only season the pasta water with water soluble things, which is why itโ€™s both important and popular to season the pasta water with salt. The rest of the seasonings should be added after the pasta is cooked.

How Is Spaghetti Seasoning Different Than Italian Seasoning?

Theyโ€™re similar and can often be used interchangeably, but there are a few ingredients that make them different recipes.

What To Use Spaghetti Seasoning On

You can use this on a simple garlic butter noodles dinner, or with our popular Instant Pot tomato sauce (my favorite homemade spaghetti sauce). It would also make a great addition to our garlic chicken pasta or this simple and delicious macaroni and tomatoes (especially if you served it with a slice of air fryer garlic bread). It would also be a great way to elevate the flavors of pizza or lasagna, sprinkled on garlic bread, or mixed into meatballs. Basically, anywhere you would normally use Italian seasoning, you can use this instead.

Storing Spaghetti Seasoning

To store this seasoning, keep it in an airtight jar. Store it in a cool, dark, dry place for up to 6 months. It only has a shelf life of about 6 months because spices start to lose their potency after that. Once you notice that the taste is less flavorful, or the color is less vibrant, itโ€™s time to make a new batch. Be sure to shake it every time before you open the jar to use it.
